Free Activities in Amsterdam to add to your itinerary
Amsterdam is one of the top European destinations for city breaks, known for its charming canals, historic buildings, and laid-back culture. But with all its popularity comes a bit of a price tag. Luckily, you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy the city. I recently spent two days exploring and was surprised by how many amazing things you can do in Amsterdam for free.
Whether you’re backpacking, on a budget, or just love finding local gems, here are my top 7 free things to do in Amsterdam that’ll make your trip unforgettable without breaking the bank.
1. Explore Amsterdam’s Canals & Visit the Bloemenmarkt
If you’re looking for free Amsterdam attractions, start with the canals. Wandering along the water, crossing little bridges, and getting lost in the maze of cobblestone streets is one of the city’s most iconic (and free) things to do.
Make sure to check out Bloemenmarkt, Amsterdam’s famous floating flower market. Even if you’re not shopping, it’s a colourful and quirky stop filled with souvenirs, tulips, and flower bulbs.

2. Ride the Free Ferry to Amsterdam Noord
One of the best free things to do in Amsterdam is hopping on the ferry behind Central Station to Amsterdam Noord. The short ride offers lovely views of the IJ river and drops you into one of the city’s most creative districts.
Explore NDSM Wharf, which is filled with street art and unique bars. Here, you’ll often find free events or pop-up exhibitions.
3. Relax in Vondelpark
The Beautiful Vondelpark is about a 30-minute walk from the centre of Amsterdam. This 120-acre park is perfect for a picnic, a bike ride, or just some downtime under the trees.
Visiting in spring? Look out for cherry blossoms, blooming flowers, and baby ducks on the pond. There are also art sculptures throughout the park, including one by Picasso!

4. Discover the Hidden Gem, Lomanstraat
If you decide to take the walk (or a bus) out to Vondelpark, you should also check out Lomanstraat. Now, simply put, this is just a quiet residential street in Amsterdam, but it’s lined with arching Honey Locust trees, giving it a magical, tunnel-like look. It’s not a tourist attraction, but that’s what makes it special. It’s a great Instagram spot in Amsterdam, no matter the time of year you visit.
Here’s a friendly reminder to be respectful of the other people around you and be careful of the cars and bikes, as it is a public road.
5. Take in the Views from the OBA Library
Next, you could head to the OBA Oosterdok public library, the biggest library in The Netherlands! It’s a great place to take a break, grab a coffee (optional), and recharge your phone or yourself.
You can also head to the top floor terrace for free, amazing city views.
6. Visit the Historic Begijnhof
Right in the middle of the city is the Begijnhof, a hidden courtyard that dates back to the 14th century. It was once home to a group of religious women and still feels like a peaceful oasis tucked behind the chaos.
It’s one of the few places in the city where you’ll see old wooden houses. Free to enter, but please be quiet and respectful—it’s still a place of reflection.
7. Watch Street Performers at Dam Square or Leidseplein
If you love people-watching, check out the street performers in Dam Square or Leidseplein. There’s almost always something going on, from musicians and magicians to living statues and break-dancers.
Now, they may not be the best performances you’ve seen, but they’re a fun way to take a break, rest your feet, and enjoy some free entertainment in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam on a Budget
Amsterdam proves that you don’t need a big budget to enjoy a big experience. From parks and ferry rides to street art and secret courtyards, there’s so much you can see and do for free.
Do you have a favourite free thing to do in Amsterdam that’s not on this list? Please drop it in the comments—I’d love to check it out next time!
